The Reentry Process

A significant element in the reentry plan is the development of an individualized programming plan that details the specific treatment needs of the offender during incarceration, including physical and mental health care, substance abuse treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy to develop positive behaviors and attitudes, education and vocational training and work experience. The plan also includes managing the key transition period including finding housing, providing continuity of care, creating employment opportunities and preparing family members, victims and the community. The report states that successful reentry planning should ensure that community corrections officers have a range of options available to them to reinforce positive behavior and to address, swiftly and certainly, failure to comply with conditions of release (Report of the Re-Entry Policy Council 2005).
